The Master Shepherd Arrives at Appuldurcombe House
There are some things every wedding needs but nobody really gets excited about.
Toilets have traditionally been one of them.
Until now.
Our brand-new Master Shepherd luxury shepherd's hut washroom recently took pride of place at a beautiful wedding at Appuldurcombe House, and it looked so at home amongst the historic ruins that we couldn't resist taking a few photographs.
Unlike a conventional plastic portable toilet or standard white toilet trailer, The Master Shepherd has been designed to become part of your wedding rather than something you're desperate to hide behind a hedge. With its shepherd's hut styling, timber finish and boutique interior, it blends naturally into country house venues, festival weddings and marquee receptions while giving guests a genuinely luxurious experience
A Wedding Venue Steeped in History
Appuldurcombe House is one of the Isle of Wight's most recognisable wedding venues.
Built during the early 18th century as the magnificent home of the Worsley family, the English Baroque house was once considered the grandest residence on the Island. Although now a romantic shell, its striking ruins, elegant stonework and Capability Brown-designed landscape provide one of the most atmospheric settings imaginable for an outdoor wedding. Today, the venue hosts exclusive Saturday weddings, allowing couples to celebrate amongst centuries of history in a truly unique setting.
It's no surprise that it's become one of our favourite venues to work at.
Where Should You Put the Washroom?
One question we're often asked is:
"Where should the toilet trailer go?"
The answer depends largely on where you're planning to say "I do."
If your ceremony is taking place inside the licensed ceremony room, positioning isn't particularly critical.
However, many couples choose to exchange vows amongst the famous ruins (weather permitting, of course), and that's where a little planning can make a big difference. Choosing the right location means your luxury washroom stays convenient for guests without unexpectedly appearing in every photograph of your ceremony.

If we're being honest...
The Master Shepherd is probably one of the few toilets we'd actually be happy to see in a wedding album!
The Discreet Favourite
This is the location we recommend most often.
Situated on the hard standing on the east side of the house, Position 1 keeps the washroom tucked neatly away whilst remaining easily accessible for guests.
It's probably the furthest point from the Great Hall that we'd comfortably use, but in reality the walk is only a minute or so and has never proved to be an issue.
One small tip for your event power team: ask them to install a floodlight nearby. This area becomes quite dark later in the evening and a little extra lighting makes all the difference.
For many weddings, this is our go-to location.
Convenient, Characterful and Surprisingly Photogenic
Position 2 is probably our favourite.
Located directly outside the southern double doors of the Great Hall, guests simply stroll through the ruins before arriving at the washroom.
It's close enough to be incredibly convenient without dominating the space, and because of The Master Shepherd's distinctive shepherd's hut styling, it actually complements the surroundings beautifully.
Rather than trying to disguise the facilities, this location lets them become part of the overall wedding aesthetic.
It also happens to create some wonderfully quirky photo opportunities.
Perfect for Outdoor Celebrations
Although we've seen other toilet trailers positioned here, we haven't yet had the opportunity to place The Master Shepherd in Position 3 ourselves.
Located nearer the fountain and gardens, it's a great option when the weather forecast looks promising and you expect guests to spend much of the evening outdoors.
If your reception naturally spills into the surrounding grounds, this location keeps facilities close to the action without guests needing to wander too far.

Every Wedding is Different
Of course, these aren't the only three possibilities.
One of the advantages of a self-contained luxury washroom is that it offers plenty of flexibility.
There are just a couple of practical considerations:
- The washroom requires a nearby electrical supply.
- Access is needed for delivery and collection.
